Newton PTO Minutes for May 5th 2015 4pm

Review & approval of minutes from April 2015 minutes.
Treasurer Report:
Field Trip Request: 3rd grade would like to visit Old Deerfield (Approx. $276, $6 per student) coordinated by Mr. Stone.
Vote: Approve the approx. $276 field trip request to Old Deerfield Approved: Unanimous
Scholastic News & Times For Kids: (JP) Time Magazines have been paid for 15-16 school year
PARCC Support : (MG) May 19th begins the second round of PARCC Testing. A request for additional snacks for 3rd graders was made and support approved. Snacks: Gum, bottled water & Cheeze-its
Principals Report – The ELT visit will be May 29th. A school council meeting will need to be scheduled soon. MG reported Title 1 surveys will come home for parents and spoke about a few grants that are being written to support intiaitaives at the school from family events to health screenings.
Box Tops – We have received a check from BTFE for $380. We have not determined winner for April contest TBD.
Original Works – Orignal Works orders have been handed out. PTO received about $500 profit for the art fund
2015-2016 Fundraisers: The group discussed fundraisers for the 2015-2016 School year. JP reported that booking fundraisers around this time of year allows PTO to receive a larger profit as an incentive. The group discussed successful fundraisers this school year and also the timing. KB mentioned that it be helpful if parents were given a calendar or schedule of fundraisers for the school year in September so they could know what to expect.
FALL 2015: Garden Cinema (September), Coupon Books (October), NEW! Krispy Kremes (Nov and coordinating with Parent Teacher Conferences for pick up)

Spring Scholastic Book Fair – The Scholastic Buy One Get One will be June 1st-5th
Schedule: Teachers/grades will sign up for days to browse & buy by Monday May 11th I This will allow for a schedule to made to help with promotional materials and volunteer recruitment.
Family Event – The group discussed a family event to coordinate with the BookFair A few ideas that teachers were: Indoor Starlab/Planetarium that could be placed in the gym for students to have a unique experience while learning about the solar system. Tanglewood Marionette performance that could be held at GMS. FoodPlay Productions performance which is a fun and interactive way to learn about health and nutrition. MG reported that Newton has received a $1000 grant to support a family event. The group decided to have family BBQs split amongst 2 evenings K-1 Wednesday June 3rd and 2nd – 3rd grade Thursday June 4th.
Thr group discussed location options for the book fair. MG will talk with teachers and staff to see what can work best: library, gym, etc.
Appreciation & Recognition – The group recognized Teacher Appreciation Day today. Teachers and staff expressed apparition of breakfast earlier in the day. KB spoke about the desire to send out thank you cards to local business and volunteers who have helped out this year. WS would like to also acknowledge the NHS volunteers as well. Thank you cards will go out soon.
Ground Upkeep – The group discussed lawn work needing to be done. MG will get quotes for lawn work. The group recognized Lindsay Siano for planting beautiful flowers outside of the school.
Newton 100th Birthday – A facebook page \School 100th Birthday Celebration and an email [email protected] have been set to reach out and recruit people to participate in the parade and celebration. MG would like to have a block party celebration. Hopefully committees can form soon.
District-wide Announcements – KB reported on behalf of Marianne Harcourt that the next and last District PTO meeting will be held at GMS May 13th. The Bike Rodeo will take place June 7th grades K-3 1pm and 4-8 at 3pm held at GMS. Marieanne wanted tot hank all the participants who helped with Pedestrian Safety Training and also the Walk to School Program Kick Off. The next dates for the Walk to School program are May 14th and May 28th.
